Wedding guest questions · For the host

Is the food veg, Jain, or is there alcohol?

“Khana veg hai? Jain milega? Drinks hain?”

Tell guests whether the food is vegetarian, whether there are Jain and other options, and at which functions alcohol is served. One line per function is enough. Families with a Jain elder, a diabetic parent or a household that doesn't drink plan around this, so answer it before the day.

What to tell guests

How should you answer it?

  • Say it per function. A dry haldi and a bar at the sangeet is a common mix, and guests want to know which is which.
  • For Jain food, say whether there is a separate counter. Elders will ask the caterer otherwise.
  • Mention allergies you have planned for, like nuts or gluten.
  • If you have a menu card, share it.

English

All the food is [vegetarian], with a [separate Jain counter] at every function. Drinks are served only at the [sangeet]. If anyone has an allergy, tell us and we'll let the caterer know.

Hinglish

Saara khana [shuddh shakahari] hai, har function mein [Jain counter alag] hai. Drinks sirf [sangeet] mein hain. Kisi ko allergy ho to bata dijiye, hum caterer ko bol denge.

Avoid

What goes wrong with this one?

  • Assuming "veg" covers Jain. Jain food leaves out onion, garlic and root vegetables.
  • Not saying where the bar is, so elders walk straight into it.
  • Collecting meal choices and never passing them to the caterer.

On ShaadiMode

Can someone answer this for you on WhatsApp?

ShaadiMode's guest helper answers this from your invitation on WhatsApp. If you have added a menu card, the helper sends it to anyone who asks about food. Otherwise type one line on food and drinks in More → Guest helper. It comes with Signature, where it either drafts the reply for you to approve or sends it on its own when it is sure. What is Jain food at a wedding?

Vegetarian food cooked without onion, garlic, potatoes and other root vegetables. Many caterers can run a separate Jain counter; tell guests if yours does.

Should a wedding invitation mention alcohol?

If it is served, say at which function. Guests who drink plan their ride home, and guests who don't can choose where to sit.
